Bethany Opens The Door And Is Shocked To Find Larry’s Lawyer Standing There With Divorce Papers
The morning had been unusually quiet at Larry’s house.
Bethany sat alone in the living room, staring at a cup of coffee that had already gone cold. She had barely slept the night before. Too many arguments, too many unanswered questions, and too many things Larry had refused to explain.
For the past few days, Bethany had noticed something different about Larry.
He wasn't arguing with her anymore.
He wasn't trying to explain himself.
He wasn't even asking where she was going.
Instead, Larry had become strangely calm.
And somehow, that frightened Bethany more than an argument ever could.
Bethany picked up her phone and checked her messages.
Nothing from Larry.
She sighed.
"Maybe he's finally ready to talk," she whispered.
Just then—
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
Bethany froze.
She looked toward the front door.
"Who is that?"
Another knock came.
KNOCK! KNOCK!
Bethany slowly stood up.
She wasn't expecting anyone.
She walked toward the door and looked through the window.
Her face immediately changed.
A professionally dressed man was standing outside holding a large leather folder.
Bethany didn't recognize him.
She hesitated before opening the door.
"Can I help you?"
The man looked at her seriously.
"Are you Bethany?"
Bethany's expression became suspicious.
"Yes. Who are you?"
The man reached into his jacket and pulled out a business card.
"My name is Mr. Anderson. I'm Larry's attorney."
Bethany's heart immediately dropped.
"Larry's... attorney?"
"Yes."
Bethany stared at the folder in his hand.
"What are you doing here?"
Mr. Anderson took a deep breath.
"I've been instructed to deliver these documents to you personally."
Bethany's eyes widened.
"What documents?"
He slowly opened the folder.
Bethany saw the first page.
Her face went completely pale.
At the top of the document were the words she had been terrified of seeing.
DIVORCE PETITION.
Bethany stepped backward.
"No..."
Mr. Anderson remained calm.
"Bethany, I need you to understand that I'm only here to deliver the documents and explain the basic procedure."
She shook her head.
"No. Larry wouldn't do this."
Mr. Anderson looked at her.
"Unfortunately, Larry has already filed."
Bethany's eyes filled with tears.
"He filed for divorce without even telling me?"
"He instructed me to proceed with the filing."
Bethany grabbed the edge of the door to steady herself.
"This can't be happening."
Mr. Anderson handed her the papers.
Bethany stared at them but couldn't bring herself to touch them.
"Where is Larry?"
"I can't discuss his private whereabouts with you."
Bethany finally snatched the papers from his hand.
She quickly flipped through them.
Every page seemed to make the situation more real.
Names.
Dates.
Legal statements.
Property information.
Financial requests.
And then she saw the section about their marriage.
Bethany's hands began shaking.
"He actually did this..."
Mr. Anderson nodded.
"Yes."
Bethany looked up.
"Does he really want me out of his life?"
The lawyer paused.
"That's something you need to discuss with Larry directly."
Bethany suddenly became angry.
"So he sends his lawyer instead of having the courage to tell me himself?"
Her voice echoed through the house.
"He could have walked through that door and told me!"
Mr. Anderson remained professional.
"I understand that you're upset."
"Upset?" Bethany shouted. "I'm his wife!"
She threw the papers onto the table.
"I stood beside that man through everything! And now he sends somebody to my door with divorce papers?"
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Mr. Anderson quietly said, "Bethany, I know this is difficult."
"Difficult?"
She laughed bitterly.
"You have no idea."
Suddenly, Bethany's phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
LARRY.
Her entire expression changed.
She stared at the phone.
Mr. Anderson noticed.
"That's probably someone you should speak with."
Bethany answered.
"Larry?"
There was silence on the other end.
"Larry, your lawyer is standing in my house with divorce papers."
Another pause.
"Why didn't you tell me yourself?"
Larry finally spoke.
"Because I knew you wouldn't listen."
Bethany's face hardened.
"So you were too scared to face me?"
"I wasn't scared."
"Then why didn't you come here?"
Larry sighed.
"Bethany, we've been through this too many times."
Bethany wiped her tears.
"So that's it?"
"I'm tired, Bethany."
She looked toward the lawyer.
"You're really doing this?"
Larry's voice became quieter.
"Yes."
Bethany closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Then she asked the question that had been haunting her.
"Do you still love me?"
There was silence.
That silence hurt more than any answer.
Bethany slowly lowered the phone.
"Larry?"
Nothing.
The call had ended.
Bethany stared at the screen.
"He hung up."
Mr. Anderson looked uncomfortable.
Bethany picked up the divorce papers again.
"You know what?"
She suddenly stopped crying.
Her expression changed from heartbreak to determination.
"If Larry thinks I'm just going to sign these papers without fighting for my family, he's wrong."
Mr. Anderson nodded.
"You have the right to seek your own legal counsel before signing anything."
Bethany looked directly at him.
"That's exactly what I'm going to do."
She grabbed her purse.
"I'm getting my own lawyer."
Mr. Anderson closed his folder.
"That's your decision."
Bethany walked toward the door.
But before he left, Mr. Anderson stopped.
"There is one more thing."
Bethany turned around.
"What?"
The lawyer pulled another document from the folder.
"This wasn't included in the divorce petition."
Bethany stared at him.
"What is it?"
Mr. Anderson handed her the paper.
Bethany read the heading.
Her eyes widened.
"What?"
She read it again.
It was a request concerning the house and financial assets.
Bethany looked up in disbelief.
"Larry wants this too?"
Mr. Anderson didn't answer.
Bethany's hands began trembling again.
"So he wants the house..."
She looked at the document.
"And the accounts?"
Mr. Anderson nodded.
"Those matters will be decided through the legal process."
Bethany sat down.
For the first time, the reality hit her completely.
This wasn't just an argument.
This wasn't another temporary separation.
Larry had taken legal action.
Bethany looked around the house.
The same house where she had laughed.
The same house where she had cried.
The same house where she had fought with Larry and promised they would somehow make everything work.
Now it felt like a courtroom.
She whispered,
"How did we get here?"
Mr. Anderson quietly left.
Bethany closed the door behind him.
Then she stood completely still.
She looked at the divorce papers on the table.
Her phone suddenly buzzed.
A message from Larry appeared.
"Don't make this harder than it already is."
Bethany stared at the message.
Her eyes filled with tears again.
Then she typed something.
She hesitated.
And finally pressed send.
"You should have thought about that before you filed for divorce."
She put the phone down.
But then another message appeared.
This time, it wasn't from Larry.
It was from someone she hadn't expected to hear from.
Bethany opened it.
Her eyes widened.
The message said:
"Bethany, I know what Larry is planning. You need to see me before you sign anything."
Bethany stared at the screen.
"Who is this?"
A second message appeared.
"It's someone who knows the truth about Larry."
Bethany's heart began pounding.
She looked at the divorce papers.
Then at the message.
And suddenly, the divorce wasn't the only mystery anymore.
Because if this person really knew Larry's secret...
Everything Bethany thought she knew about her marriage could be about to change.
