“This is a fish fry, not a battlefield,” Charlotte said.

“Do you want me to go?”

Bethany turned toward Larry.

“You knew this was going to happen!”

Larry tried to explain.

“I wanted everybody to have a good time.”

“Well, congratulations,” Bethany replied angrily. “You ruined it.”

Lynette finally stepped forward.

“I didn’t come here to fight anybody.”

Bethany looked at her.

“Then why did you come?”

Lynette took a breath.

“Because Larry invited me.”

Everyone looked at Larry again.

Larry nodded.

“She’s telling the truth.”

Bethany stared at him in disbelief.

Then she picked up her purse.

“You know what? I’m done.”

But before she could walk away, Charlotte grabbed her arm.

Charlotte looked toward the driveway.

“There’s another car coming.”

Larry finally admitted that he had been trying to keep everyone from fighting.

“I thought if everybody came together, we could finally clear the air.”

Bethany laughed bitterly.

“Clear the air? You invited the one person you knew would cause problems!”

Lynette responded calmly.

“I’m not responsible for your reaction.”

Latina nodded.

“Exactly.”

Bethany looked at Latina.

“You stay out of this.”

Latina stepped forward again.

But Charlotte quickly blocked her.

“Not tonight. Please.”

For a moment, everyone stood silently.

Then Larry finally said the words nobody expected.

“I’m tired of choosing sides.”

Bethany stared at him.

“So what are you saying?”

Larry looked around the backyard.
