Bethany stood quietly in the bedroom, staring at the packed suitcase beside her.
For the first time, she wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t crying.
She simply looked tired.
After everything that had happened between her and Larry, Bethany had finally convinced herself that leaving was the only option. She zipped her suitcase, grabbed her purse, and slowly walked toward the front door.
Larry was sitting in the living room, watching her without saying a word.
Bethany stopped for a moment.
“So… you’re really not going to stop me?” she asked.
Larry looked at her and sighed.
“You already made your decision, Bethany.”
Those words hurt more than she expected.
She opened the door.
But before she could step outside, a black SUV suddenly pulled into the driveway.
Bethany froze.
A sharply dressed man stepped out, carrying a leather briefcase.
Larry immediately stood up.

Bethany slowly placed her suitcase back on the floor.

The lawyer entered the house and placed his briefcase on the table.
Larry looked uncomfortable.
“Can we do this another time?”
“No,” the lawyer replied firmly. “It needs to happen today.”
Bethany looked from Larry to the lawyer.
“What is going on?”
The lawyer opened his briefcase and pulled out a large folder.
“There are several documents that require your attention.”
Bethany’s heart started beating faster.
“Documents?”
Larry stepped forward.
“Bethany, just calm down.”
She immediately snapped back.
“Don’t tell me to calm down! You’re the one who looks nervous!”
Larry went silent.
The lawyer placed the folder on the table.
“I strongly suggest that you read these before you leave this house.”
Bethany stared at the folder.
Then she noticed something written on the front.

Her face went pale.
Chapter 3 — The Papers
Bethany slowly opened the folder.
The first page made her hands shake.
She looked at Larry.
“You already filed?”
Larry didn’t answer.
That silence told her everything.
“So you were just going to let me walk out without telling me?”
Larry lowered his eyes.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.”
Bethany laughed bitterly.
“You didn’t know how to tell me that you were ending our marriage?”
The lawyer interrupted.
“There’s more.”
Bethany looked at him.
“What more could there possibly be?”
The lawyer pulled out another document.
“This isn’t simply a divorce filing.”
Bethany stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
He took a breath.
“Larry has also made a request concerning the house and certain financial assets.”
Bethany’s eyes widened.
“Larry… what did you do?”
Larry finally looked at her.
“I was trying to protect myself.”
Bethany shook her head.
“No. You were trying to protect yourself from me.”
Chapter 4 — The Secret
The argument became louder.
Bethany accused Larry of hiding things.
Larry insisted that she didn’t know the entire story.
Finally, the lawyer raised his voice.
“Enough!”
The room went silent.
“There is one thing neither of you knows.”
Bethany looked confused.
Larry looked nervous.
The lawyer opened another envelope.
“This was delivered to my office yesterday.”
He placed a photograph on the table.
Bethany picked it up.
Her expression instantly changed.
It was Larry.
But he wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him was a woman Bethany had never seen before.
“Who is she?” Bethany whispered.

Chapter 5 — The Woman in the Photograph
Bethany couldn’t take her eyes off the picture.
“Larry, tell me who she is.”
Larry rubbed his forehead.
“It’s not what you think.”
Bethany laughed.
“That is what everybody says when it’s exactly what I think.”
The lawyer stepped between them.
“Mrs. Bethany, the photograph is only part of the situation.”
Bethany looked at him.
“Then tell me everything.”
The lawyer hesitated.
“There are financial records connected to this woman.”
Bethany’s heart sank.
“Financial records?”
“Yes.”
Larry finally spoke.
“She needed help.”
Bethany stared at him.
“You were giving another woman money?”
Larry didn’t answer.
Bethany grabbed her suitcase.
“I’m done.”
She turned toward the door again.
But the lawyer stopped her.
“Mrs. Bethany, if you leave right now, you may never get the full truth.”
Bethany slowly turned around.
“What truth?”
The lawyer looked at Larry.
“Tell her.”
Chapter 6 — Larry Finally Confesses
Larry stood completely still.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Finally, he said,
“She’s my sister.”
Bethany froze.
“What?”
Larry nodded.
“My younger sister.”
Bethany looked at the photograph again.
“But why did you hide her from me?”
Larry sighed.
“Because she came back into my life after years of being gone.”
The lawyer nodded.
“There is more to the story.”
Larry looked at him.
“Do we really have to tell her?”
“Yes.”
Bethany stepped closer.
“Tell me.”
Larry finally confessed that his sister had returned with serious financial problems and that he had been secretly helping her.
But Bethany wasn’t convinced.
“If that’s true, why hide it?”
Larry looked at her with tears in his eyes.
“Because I knew you would think I was choosing her over you.”
Bethany’s anger slowly turned into confusion.
But then the lawyer opened another file.
“And unfortunately… that isn’t the biggest problem.”
Chapter 7 — The Shocking Discovery
The lawyer pulled out several bank statements.
“These transactions were made without Larry’s authorization.”
Larry looked shocked.
“What?”
The lawyer nodded.
“Someone has been using Larry’s information.”
Bethany stared at the documents.
“So somebody has been stealing from him?”
“Exactly.”
Larry suddenly realized something.
“That’s why the numbers didn’t make sense.”
Bethany looked at him.
“You thought I was responsible?”
Larry shook his head.
“No.”
The lawyer added,
“The person responsible appears to have access to information from inside this house.”
Everyone became silent.
Bethany looked toward Larry.
Larry looked toward the hallway.
Then they heard a noise from upstairs.
A door slowly closed.
Bethany whispered,
“Did you hear that?”
Larry nodded.
The lawyer immediately stood up.
“Someone else is in this house.”
Chapter 8 — Someone Is Watching
Larry quickly walked toward the stairs.
Bethany followed behind him.
“Larry, wait!”
The lawyer called after them.
“Don’t go up alone.”
They reached the hallway.
Everything was quiet.
Larry opened the bedroom door.
Nobody was there.
But the window was open.
Bethany walked toward it.
On the floor was a small envelope.
She picked it up.
There was no name on it.
She opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
“You should have left when you had the chance.”
Bethany’s hands began to shake.
Larry took the note from her.
His expression turned serious.
“This isn’t a coincidence.”
The lawyer looked at the message.

The woman looked at Bethany.

She paused.

Larry stepped closer.
“What?”
She looked directly at Bethany.

Everyone froze.

The woman slowly pointed toward the hallway.

A familiar voice came from upstairs.
“Maybe I should tell them myself.”
Everyone turned around.
Someone was standing at the top of the stairs.
And Bethany knew that person.
