Brooke stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the elegant dress she had chosen for the evening. She had spent nearly an hour getting ready, not because she wanted to impress anyone, she told herself, but because tonight was important.

She was finally going to meet Isaiah.

After everything that had happened between them, Brooke wanted the evening to be perfect. There were still unanswered questions, complicated emotions, and things neither of them had been brave enough to say. But tonight, Brooke hoped they could finally talk honestly.

Just as she reached for her purse, the bedroom door suddenly opened.

Larry stood there.

Brooke turned around, surprised by the serious expression on his face.

“What?” she asked.

Larry looked at her from head to toe and frowned.

“You’re not meeting Isaiah in that dress.”

For a moment, Brooke thought she had misunderstood him.

“Excuse me?”

Larry crossed his arms.

“I said you can’t go dressed like that.”

Brooke slowly put down her purse.

“And who exactly are you to tell me what I can or cannot wear?”

Larry’s expression hardened.

“I’m trying to protect you.”

“Protect me?” Brooke laughed bitterly. “From what? A dress?”

“This isn’t funny, Brooke.”

“No, Larry. What isn’t funny is you standing in front of me and acting like you have the right to control my life.”

Larry took a step closer.

“I know Isaiah.”

“And I know myself,” Brooke quickly replied. “I don't need your permission to meet anyone.”

The tension in the room grew heavier.

Larry had expected Brooke to argue, but he hadn't expected her to become this angry. Still, something about the situation made him uncomfortable.

“You don't understand what you're walking into,” he said quietly.

Brooke's eyes narrowed.

“Then explain it.”

Larry hesitated.

That hesitation was enough to make Brooke even more suspicious.

“You know something,” she said.

“I didn't say that.”

“But you didn't deny it either.”

Before Larry could answer, the sound of the front door opening interrupted them.

Both Brooke and Larry froze.

Neither of them had expected anyone.

A few seconds later, footsteps echoed through the hallway.

Brooke walked toward the living room, her heart beating faster with every step.

And then she stopped.

Bethany was standing at the door.

For a moment, complete silence filled the room.

Bethany looked surprised to see Brooke dressed up. Then her eyes moved toward Larry.

The awkwardness between all three of them was impossible to ignore.

“Bethany?” Larry said.

“What are you doing here?” Brooke asked coldly.

Bethany took a deep breath.

“I came to talk.”

Brooke immediately folded her arms.

“About what?”

Bethany looked directly at Larry before answering.

“Something important.”

Brooke noticed the look between them.

Her expression changed.

“Oh, I see.”

“It isn't what you think,” Bethany quickly said.

Brooke laughed.

“Really? Because every time someone says that, it's usually exactly what I think.”

Larry stepped forward.

“Brooke, calm down.”

That was the wrong thing to say.

Brooke's eyes widened.

“Don't tell me to calm down!”

Larry stopped immediately.

Bethany looked uncomfortable.

“Brooke, I didn't come here to cause problems.”

Brooke turned toward her.

“Then you should have stayed away.”

Bethany looked shocked.

“What?”

“You heard me,” Brooke said. “Stay out of my business.”

The words hit Bethany harder than Brooke expected.

For a moment, Bethany said nothing.

Larry looked between the two women in disbelief.

“Brooke, that's enough.”

Brooke quickly turned toward him.

“No, Larry. You don't get to decide when something is enough.”

The room fell silent again.

Brooke's anger had been building for much longer than either Larry or Bethany realized.

She was tired of people appearing in her life, giving advice, hiding secrets, and then acting surprised when she finally demanded answers.

“You both keep acting like you know what's best for me,” Brooke continued. “Larry tells me what I should wear. Bethany suddenly appears at my door because she has something ‘important’ to say. What is going on?”

Bethany looked at Larry.

Larry avoided her eyes.

Brooke noticed.

Her heart began to race.

“There it is again,” she said. “That look.”

“What look?” Larry asked.

“That look you two keep giving each other.”

Bethany quickly shook her head.

“Brooke, please don't misunderstand this.”

“Then explain it!”

Bethany opened her mouth but stopped.

Larry looked uncomfortable.

That silence told Brooke everything she needed to know.

Or at least, she thought it did.

Brooke grabbed her purse from the table.

“I don't have time for this.”

“Where are you going?” Larry asked.

Brooke stared at him.

“To meet Isaiah.”

Larry immediately stepped in front of her.

“No.”

Brooke looked at him in disbelief.

“Move.”

“Brooke, listen to me.”

“I said move!”

Bethany suddenly stepped between them.

“Larry, stop.”

Both of them looked at her.

Bethany's voice was calm, but her face showed concern.

“You can't force her to stay here.”

Larry shook his head.

“You don't understand.”

“Then tell us!” Brooke shouted.

The room became completely silent.

Larry finally looked directly at Brooke.

His face had changed.

The anger was gone.

Now, he looked worried.

“I heard something about Isaiah,” Larry said quietly.

Brooke's expression changed.

“What did you hear?”

Larry hesitated again.

Brooke felt fear slowly replace her anger.

“What did you hear, Larry?”

Bethany suddenly looked nervous.

Larry turned toward her.

“You didn't tell her?”

Bethany stared back at him.

“Tell me what?” Brooke demanded.

Bethany slowly looked toward Brooke.

“I came here because I thought you should know something before meeting Isaiah.”

Brooke felt her hands tighten around her purse.

“What is it?”

Bethany took a deep breath.

“Isaiah hasn't been completely honest with you.”

Brooke's heart dropped.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Larry looked away.

Brooke noticed that too.

“So you both knew?”

“It isn't that simple,” Bethany said.

“Don't say that!” Brooke shouted. “Everyone keeps saying it's complicated. Everyone keeps hiding things from me!”

Tears began to form in her eyes, but Brooke refused to let them fall.

Bethany took a step closer.

“Brooke, I was trying to protect you.”

Brooke laughed through her anger.

“That's exactly what Larry said.”

Larry looked at Bethany.

Bethany looked back at him.

For the first time, they both realized how bad the situation looked.

Brooke stood between two people who claimed they wanted to protect her, yet neither of them had been willing to tell her the truth.

Suddenly, Brooke's phone rang.

Everyone looked toward it.

Brooke slowly took the phone from her purse.

The name on the screen made her freeze.

Isaiah.

Larry immediately stepped closer.

“Don't answer it.”

Brooke looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because you need to hear everything first.”

Brooke stared at the phone as it continued ringing.

Bethany looked nervous.

Larry looked terrified.

And Brooke realized something that made her stomach turn.

Whatever secret they were hiding...

It was much bigger than she had imagined.

The phone finally stopped ringing.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Brooke looked directly at Bethany.

“Tell me the truth.”

Bethany lowered her eyes.

Larry closed his eyes as if he already knew what was coming.

Brooke's voice became colder.

“Right now.”

Bethany slowly raised her head.

But before she could say a single word...

There was a loud knock at the front door.

Everyone froze.

Another knock came.

This time, louder.

Brooke slowly turned toward the door.

Larry looked terrified.

Bethany whispered something that Brooke could barely hear.

“No... this can't be happening.”

Brooke stared at both of them.

“Who is it?”

Nobody answered.

Then a familiar voice came from outside.

“Brooke! Open the door!”

Brooke's eyes widened.

She recognized the voice immediately.

It was Isaiah.

Larry and Bethany looked at each other in complete shock.

Brooke slowly walked toward the door.

Behind her, Larry spoke in a desperate voice.

“Brooke... don't open it.”

Brooke stopped.

She turned around.

For the first time that night, she wasn't angry.

She was calm.

Too calm.

“You told me not to meet Isaiah because of my dress,” she said, staring at Larry. “But now I think the dress was never the real problem.”

Larry said nothing.

Brooke looked at Bethany.

“You came here to warn me about Isaiah.”

Bethany remained silent.

Then Brooke looked toward the front door.

Isaiah knocked again.

“Brooke, please!”

Brooke took a deep breath.

Her hand slowly reached for the door handle.

Larry stepped forward.

“Wait!”

But Brooke didn't stop.

Because now, she wanted the truth.

No more secrets.

No more warnings.

No more people deciding what she should know.

She slowly opened the door.

Isaiah stood there.

But the moment Brooke saw the person standing behind him...

Her entire expression changed.

Larry's face went pale.

Bethany covered her mouth in shock.

And Brooke realized that the night had just become far more dangerous than any of them had expected.
