She tried calling Sharra.
Nothing.
Then Brooke opened her banking app, and her heart sank.
Her credit card had been declined.
At first, she thought it was a mistake.
“There's no way,” Brooke whispered.
She tried again.
DECLINED.
Brooke stared at the screen in disbelief.
She walked into a nearby store and tried using the card one more time.
The cashier shook her head apologetically.
“I'm sorry. It isn't going through.”
Brooke slowly pulled the card back.
Her face became pale.
She immediately called Larry again, but this time she finally received a message.

Brooke couldn't believe what she was seeing.

She sat down on a bench outside the store, holding her phone in both hands.
She had argued with Larry before. She had disagreed with Sharra before. But this felt different.
They had taken away the two things she depended on most.

Brooke felt completely alone.
Meanwhile, Larry and Sharra Had Made a Difficult Decision
Back at home, Larry was sitting quietly at the kitchen table while Sharra stood nearby.
Neither of them looked happy about what they had done.
Larry finally broke the silence.
“I don't want to punish Brooke,” he said. “But she has to understand that there are consequences.”
Sharra nodded.
“She thinks we're trying to control her. That's not what this is about.”
Larry sighed.

Sharra looked toward the hallway.
“Maybe taking away her phone and credit card will make her realize how serious everything has become.”
Larry didn't answer.
Deep down, he wasn't comfortable with the decision.
Brooke was still his daughter in every way that mattered to him.
And even though he was angry, he couldn't stop worrying about her.
“I'm going to give her some time,” Larry finally said. “She'll come home.”
But Sharra wasn't so sure.
Brooke Didn't Go Home
As the afternoon passed, Brooke's anger slowly turned into sadness.
She walked through the streets without knowing where she wanted to go.
Her phone was useless.
Her card was useless.
And every time she thought about going home, she remembered the last argument she'd had with Larry.
“I don't need anybody!” she had shouted.
Now those words were haunting her.
Brooke eventually found a quiet place and sat down.
She pulled her knees toward herself and started crying.
“I didn't mean it,” she whispered.
She wanted to call someone.

By evening, Brooke still hadn't returned.
Sharra looked at the clock.

“No.”
Larry tried calling Brooke again, but the phone remained disconnected.

“Where could she have gone?”
Sharra grabbed her jacket.
“I'm going to look for her.”

“I'm coming with you.”

“If she sees both of us, she might run.”
Larry reluctantly agreed.
“Please find her.”
Sharra walked outside and began searching.
She checked places Brooke usually visited.
The coffee shop.
The park.
The shopping center.
Nothing.
Then she remembered something.
Brooke had once told her about a quiet place where she went whenever she needed to think.
Sharra immediately drove there.
Sharra Finds Brooke
When Sharra arrived, she saw someone sitting alone on a bench.
It was Brooke.
Her head was down.
Her eyes were red from crying.
Sharra stopped several feet away.
For a moment, she didn't say anything.

“Brooke?”
Brooke looked up.

“You found me.”
Sharra slowly walked toward her.

Brooke wiped her tears.
“Why?”
“Because I was worried.”
Brooke looked away.
“You were worried after cutting off my phone?”
Sharra took a deep breath.
“Yes.”
Brooke laughed bitterly.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“I know.”
Brooke looked at her.
“You and Larry took everything away from me.”
Sharra sat beside her.
“We didn't take everything away from you.”
“You took my phone. You took my card. What else am I supposed to think?”
Sharra remained quiet for a moment.
Then she said something Brooke wasn't expecting.
“You're right.”
Brooke stared at her.
“What?”
“You're right to be angry.”
Sharra's voice became emotional.
“We were so focused on teaching you a lesson that we didn't stop to think about how you would feel.”
Brooke's eyes filled with tears again.
“I just wanted someone to listen to me.”
Sharra reached for her hand.
“I should have listened.”
Brooke Finally Opens Up
For the first time that day, Brooke stopped pretending she was okay.
“I thought nobody cared,” she said.
Sharra shook her head.
“That isn't true.”
“It felt true.”
Brooke's voice cracked.
“When my phone stopped working, I felt like I couldn't reach anyone. Then my card didn't work, and I realized I couldn't even take care of myself.”
Sharra looked heartbroken.
“Brooke…”
“I know I made mistakes,” Brooke continued. “I know I've made you and Larry angry. But I didn't want to feel abandoned.”
Sharra pulled Brooke into a hug.
Brooke immediately started crying.
“I never wanted you to feel abandoned,” Sharra whispered.
For several moments, neither of them said anything.
They simply sat there together.
Then Brooke Reveals Something That Shocks Sharra
Just when Sharra thought the situation was calming down, Brooke pulled away.
“There is something else.”
Sharra looked at her.
“What?”
Brooke hesitated.

“I am.”
“No,” Sharra said gently. “You're hurt. There's a difference.”

“I don't know where I belong anymore.”
Sharra immediately took her hand.
“You belong with people who love you.”
Brooke looked directly into her eyes.
“Do you really love me?”
Sharra didn't hesitate.
“Yes.”
“Even after everything?”
“Especially after everything.”
Brooke started crying again.
Larry Receives the Call
Sharra eventually called Larry.
“She’s with me.”
Larry closed his eyes in relief.
“Is she okay?”
“She’s upset, but she's safe.”
Larry sat down heavily.
“Can I talk to her?”
Sharra looked at Brooke.
“Your dad wants to talk.”
Brooke hesitated before taking the phone.
“Dad?”
Larry's voice immediately softened.
“Brooke, I'm sorry.”
She didn't respond.
“I was angry,” Larry continued. “But I should never have let my anger make you feel like you had nobody.”
Brooke began crying again.
“I just wanted you to understand me.”
“I do,” Larry said. “Maybe not everything you're doing, but I understand that you're hurting.”

Then Larry said:
“Come home.”
Brooke looked at Sharra.
“Will you be angry?”
“No,” Larry replied. “We'll talk. That's all.”

Sharra helped Brooke stand.
As they walked toward the car, Brooke suddenly stopped.
“Sharra?”
“Yes?”

Sharra turned around.
Brooke looked nervous.
