Breaking:Bethany falls into a coma during surgery. Before the operation, her only request was, "Bring Larry to me." Charlotte immediately calls Larry. Will he make it in time?
The hospital was filled with anxious silence as Bethany was prepared for emergency surgery. After weeks of struggling with severe health problems, the doctors finally decided there was no time left to wait.
Family members gathered outside her hospital room, hoping for good news.
Charlotte stood beside Bethany's bed, gently holding her hand.
"You'll be okay," Charlotte whispered. "The doctors know what they're doing."
Bethany managed a weak smile, but deep down she knew the surgery carried serious risks.
Just before the nurses wheeled her toward the operating room, she suddenly reached for Charlotte's hand.
"Please... wait."
Charlotte leaned closer.
"What is it?"
Bethany took a slow breath.
"If something happens to me..."
"Don't say that," Charlotte interrupted.
Bethany shook her head gently.
"I need you to promise me."
Charlotte nodded through tears.
"I promise."
Bethany looked toward the hallway as if she were searching for someone.
"Please... bring Larry to me."
Charlotte's heart broke.
"I just want to see him one more time before they take me in."
Charlotte immediately pulled out her phone and dialed Larry's number.
It rang...
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Finally, Larry answered.
"Charlotte?"
Her voice trembled.
"Larry... you have to come now."
"What happened?"
"They're taking Bethany into surgery."
Larry grabbed his car keys.
"I'm leaving right now."
Charlotte hesitated before saying the words Bethany had asked her to deliver.
"She only has one request."
"What is it?"
"She wants to see you."
Larry didn't answer.
He simply hung up and raced toward the hospital.
Meanwhile, inside the operating room, doctors began the complex procedure.
At first, everything seemed stable.
Monitors showed steady heart rhythms.
The surgical team worked carefully.
Then...
An alarm suddenly echoed through the room.
A nurse looked at the monitor.
"Doctor... her blood pressure is dropping!"
"Increase fluids!"
Another alarm sounded.
Her oxygen levels began falling rapidly.
"She's not responding!"
The lead surgeon remained calm.
"Everyone stay focused."
Despite every effort, Bethany's condition worsened.
Outside the operating room, Charlotte watched the emergency lights above the door begin flashing.
Her hands started shaking.
She whispered,
"Please... not now."
Across town, Larry drove as quickly as traffic allowed.
Every red light felt like an eternity.
His phone kept ringing, but he ignored every call.
The only thing on his mind was Bethany's request.
As he remembered happier moments they had shared, regret filled his heart.
He thought about the arguments, the misunderstandings, and the words they could never take back.
"I should've been there sooner," he whispered.
Back inside the operating room...
Another alarm rang louder than before.
"Doctor!"
The heart monitor showed dangerous changes.
"She's losing consciousness."
The anesthesiologist checked her pupils.
Moments later, the room fell into complete silence.
The lead surgeon looked at the team.
"Bethany has slipped into a coma."
No one spoke.
The only sounds were the steady beeping of the machines and the hurried instructions of the medical staff as they worked to stabilize her.
Outside, Charlotte saw the surgeon walk through the doors.
She immediately stood up.
"How is she?"
The doctor removed his surgical cap.
"The operation is complete, but Bethany experienced a serious complication."
Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.
"Is she alive?"
"Yes."
She sighed with relief.
"But..."
The doctor's expression became solemn.
"She has fallen into a coma."
Charlotte collapsed into a nearby chair, unable to believe what she had just heard.
Just then...
The hospital entrance doors burst open.
Larry rushed inside, breathing heavily.
"I'm here!"
He looked around desperately.
"Where's Bethany?"
Charlotte slowly stood.
Tears streamed down her face.
"You made it..."
Larry smiled with relief.
"Can I see her?"
Charlotte looked down at the floor before answering.
"You were only a few minutes too late."
Larry froze.
"What do you mean?"
"The surgery is over."
He looked toward the ICU hallway.
"And Bethany..."
Charlotte struggled to continue.
"...never woke up."
Larry felt his knees weaken.
"No..."
The doctor gently placed a hand on his shoulder.
"She's alive, but she's in a coma. We don't know when—or if—she'll wake up."
Larry slowly walked into the intensive care unit.
Bethany lay peacefully in the hospital bed, surrounded by monitors and quiet machines.
He carefully took her hand.
"I'm here," he whispered.
"I'm sorry I wasn't faster."
A single tear rolled down his face and landed on Bethany's hand.
For several moments, nothing happened.
Then...
The heart monitor gave one slightly stronger beep.
Larry looked up hopefully.
The nurse glanced at the monitor.
"Sometimes patients can respond to familiar voices."
Larry leaned closer.
"You asked for me."
He squeezed her hand gently.
"I'm not going anywhere."
As everyone watched in silence...
Bethany's fingers seemed to move ever so slightly.
Charlotte gasped.
The doctor stepped forward immediately.
"Did everyone see that?"
The room filled with cautious hope.
Was it only an involuntary movement...
Or had Bethany heard Larry's voice?
To be continued...
