The hallway was already thick with tension.
Lynette’s footsteps echoed sharply against the floor as she tried to leave, her face tight with frustration, her eyes refusing to look back. Behind her, Sharra rushed forward, panic written all over her face.
“Lynette, WAIT!” Sharra shouted, grabbing her arm.
Lynette yanked slightly, trying to pull free. “Let go of me, Sharra. This doesn’t concern you.”
But Sharra held on tighter. “It DOES concern me! You’re about to make a huge mistake—just stop and think for one second!”
Lynette’s jaw clenched. “You don’t understand anything.”
And that’s when it happened.
The door swung open.
BANG.
Both of them froze.
Bethany stood at the entrance, her eyes scanning the scene in front of her—Sharra gripping Lynette’s arm, Lynette trying to break free, the tension practically exploding in the air.
For a moment, no one spoke.
Then Bethany’s voice cut through the silence like a blade.
“…What is going on here?”
Sharra slowly released Lynette’s arm, her face pale. “Bethany… it’s not what it looks like—”
“Oh really?” Bethany stepped forward, her gaze locking onto Lynette. “Because it looks like someone’s trying to run.”
Lynette crossed her arms, forcing a calm she didn’t feel. “I’m not running from anything.”
Bethany let out a short, bitter laugh. “You always say that right before the truth comes out.”
The air shifted.
Sharra stepped between them. “Bethany, please—just listen for a second—”
“No.” Bethany’s voice hardened. “Not this time.”
She moved closer, eyes never leaving Lynette.
“I’ve been hearing things. Seeing things. And now I walk in on THIS?” she gestured sharply. “You two think I’m stupid?”
Lynette’s composure cracked just slightly. “No one thinks that.”
“Then explain it,” Bethany shot back. “Right now.”
Silence.
Sharra looked at Lynette, silently begging her to say something—anything—but Lynette hesitated. And that hesitation said everything.
Bethany noticed.
Her expression changed… from anger to something deeper. Hurt.
“…Wow,” Bethany whispered. “So it’s true.”
“Bethany, it’s complicated,” Lynette finally said.
“Complicated?” Bethany’s voice rose. “You call sneaking around and hiding things COMPLICATED?!”
Sharra stepped forward again. “She wasn’t trying to hurt you—”
“Then WHY hide it?!” Bethany snapped, tears now threatening to fall. “Why not come to me like a normal person?”
Lynette looked away.
That was the final blow.
Bethany shook her head slowly, disbelief written all over her face. “I trusted you.”
The room felt smaller. Heavier.
“I defended you when everyone else doubted you,” Bethany continued, her voice breaking. “And THIS is what you do?”
Lynette swallowed hard. “You don’t know the full story.”
“Then TELL ME!” Bethany yelled.
Another silence.
Sharra closed her eyes, realizing this was spiraling out of control.
“Lynette…” she whispered, “just tell her.”
But Lynette didn’t.
And that was the moment everything shattered.
Bethany stepped back, wiping her tears, her expression turning cold.
“No,” she said quietly. “I’m done asking.”
She looked at both of them—once her closest circle, now strangers.
“Whatever this is… you can keep it.”
Sharra’s eyes widened. “Bethany, don’t do this—”
But Bethany was already turning away.
“Bethany!” Lynette called out, panic finally breaking through her voice.
She stopped… but didn’t turn around.
“Last chance,” Bethany said softly. “Say something that makes me stay.”
The silence that followed was louder than anything.
Lynette opened her mouth… but no words came out.
And that was it.
Bethany walked away.
The door slammed behind her, echoing like the end of something that could never be fixed.
Sharra turned to Lynette, her voice trembling. “Why didn’t you tell her?”
Lynette’s eyes filled with regret as she whispered, “Because if she knew the truth… it would destroy everything.”
Sharra shook her head slowly. “You just did.”
And somewhere down the hall… Bethany kept walking, her heart breaking with every step, unaware that the truth she was running from…
…was far worse than she ever imagined.
