Bethany’s hands trembled as she stepped out of her car, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows across her driveway. Something felt… off. The front gate was slightly open, and an unfamiliar envelope was wedged into the door.

She froze.

A strange sense of dread crept over her as she slowly walked forward and pulled the envelope free. It was thick. Official. Her name was printed in bold letters across the front.

BETHANY COLLINS

Her heart began to race.

“Court…?” she whispered under her breath after noticing the seal.

With shaky fingers, she tore it open.

As her eyes scanned the document, her face went pale.

CUSTODY HEARING NOTICE

Her breath caught in her throat.

“Brooke’s custody…?” she whispered, stepping back as if the paper itself had pushed her.

Her mind raced. Who would file something like this? There was only one person who had the motive, the nerve… but no, it couldn’t be—

Her eyes dropped to the bottom of the page.

And that’s when everything shattered.

Filed by: Larry Collins

The paper slipped from her hand.

“No… no, this isn’t real…” she muttered, shaking her head violently.

Larry?

The same man who had stood beside her, who had promised they were a team… the same man who had reassured her just days ago that everything would be fine?

He was taking Brooke away from her.

Tears welled up instantly, but anger followed just as fast.

“This is a joke,” she snapped, picking up the notice again. “This has to be Sharra’s doing… she must have poisoned him against me!”

Without wasting another second, Bethany grabbed her phone and dialed Larry.

It rang.

And rang.

And rang.

No answer.

Her frustration exploded.

“Of course,” she scoffed bitterly. “Now you don’t want to talk.”

Just as she was about to throw her phone aside, a message popped up.

Larry: “We need to talk. Not over the phone.”

Bethany stared at the screen, her chest rising and falling rapidly.

“Talk?” she whispered. “After THIS?”

But deep down, she knew one thing—

This wasn’t just a misunderstanding.

This was war.

That evening, Bethany stormed into the quiet café where Larry had asked to meet. Her eyes scanned the room until she saw him sitting in the corner, looking unusually calm.

Too calm.

She marched straight to him and slammed the court notice onto the table.

“What is THIS, Larry?!” she demanded, her voice shaking with rage.

Larry looked up slowly, his expression serious.

“I was going to explain—”

“Explain?!” she cut him off. “You’re trying to take Brooke away from me! Your own daughter!”

Larry exhaled deeply, rubbing his temples.

“This isn’t about taking her away, Bethany. It’s about protecting her.”

Bethany laughed bitterly.

“Protecting her? From ME?”

“Yes,” he said firmly.

The word hit her like a slap.

For a moment, there was silence.

Then Bethany leaned in, her eyes filled with disbelief and hurt.

“Who got to you?” she asked coldly. “Was it Sharra? What lies did she tell you this time?”

Larry shook his head.

“This isn’t about Sharra,” he said quietly. “This is about what I found out.”

Bethany’s expression faltered.

“…What are you talking about?”

Larry reached into his bag and pulled out a folder, placing it in front of her.

“Open it.”

With hesitant hands, Bethany flipped it open.

Inside were documents… reports… messages…

And then—

Her eyes widened.

“No…” she whispered.

It was evidence.

Private conversations. Decisions she had made. Secrets she thought no one knew.

All pointing to one thing—

That Brooke had been caught in the middle of something far bigger… something dangerous.

Bethany’s breathing became uneven.

“You went through my things?” she asked, her voice barely audible.

“I had to,” Larry replied. “Because you weren’t telling me the truth.”

Tears streamed down her face now.

“I was trying to protect her…” she whispered.

“At what cost, Bethany?” Larry shot back. “She’s confused, she’s scared—and she doesn’t know who to trust anymore!”

That broke something inside her.

Bethany collapsed back into her chair, covering her face.

“I never wanted it to go this far…” she sobbed.

Larry’s voice softened, but his words were firm.

“That’s why I filed for custody. Not to hurt you… but to give Brooke stability.”

Bethany slowly looked up at him, her eyes red and filled with pain.

“So this is it?” she whispered. “You’re choosing this… over us?”

Larry hesitated.

Then quietly said,

“I’m choosing Brooke.”

The courtroom date was set.

The battle lines were drawn.

And for the first time, Bethany realized—

This wasn’t just about love, betrayal, or secrets anymore…

It was about who deserved Brooke’s future. 😳
