Brooke stood in the middle of the living room, her small suitcase sitting by her feet, her hands shaking — not from fear, but from anger.
Larry stared at her in disbelief. “Brooke, you’re overreacting,” he said firmly. “You can’t just decide not to stay with Bethany. She’s your mother.”
Brooke’s eyes filled with tears, but she refused to let them fall. “No, Dad. I’m not overreacting. I’m done.”
From the kitchen doorway, Bethany folded her arms. “This is ridiculous,” she snapped. “You’re staying here, Brooke. End of discussion.”
Brooke turned toward her slowly. Her voice wasn’t loud — but it was powerful.
“If you try to force me,” she said, “I swear I will run away. And this time? I won’t come back.”
The room fell silent.
Larry felt his heart drop. “Brooke, don’t say things like that.”
“I mean it!” she shouted, her voice cracking. “You both think you can just decide my life like I’m a piece of furniture! I’m not staying in this house. I’m not staying with her!”
Bethany stepped forward, furious. “After everything I’ve done for you?”
“Everything you’ve done?” Brooke laughed bitterly. “You sent me to boot camp because I ‘had attitude.’ You told everyone I was the problem. You never once asked why I was upset!”
Larry rubbed his forehead. He knew this conversation was coming. For months, Brooke had grown distant, cold whenever Bethany entered the room.
“Brooke,” Larry said softly, “running away isn’t the answer.”
“Then don’t force me!” she shot back. “Let me stay with Aunt Sharra. Let me stay anywhere else. I feel trapped here.”
Bethany’s expression shifted slightly — not softer, but unsettled. “You’re manipulating us.”
“No,” Brooke whispered. “I’m begging you.”
The words hit harder than the threat.
Larry looked at Bethany. “Maybe we should listen to her.”
Bethany’s eyes widened. “So now you’re taking her side?”
“I’m taking our daughter’s pain seriously.”
Brooke wiped her tears. “If you send me back to this house full-time, I will leave. I’ve already thought about it. I have friends who would help me.”
Larry’s stomach twisted. He could see it — the desperation in her eyes. She wasn’t bluffing.
Bethany paced the room. “This is emotional blackmail.”
“No,” Larry said firmly now. “This is a cry for help.”
The tension cracked open something that had been building for years.
Brooke stepped closer to her father. “I don’t hate you, Dad. I just… I can’t stay here right now. Every time I’m around her, I feel like I can’t breathe.”
Bethany’s face paled. “You make me sound like a monster.”
Brooke shook her head. “I just need space.”
Larry took a deep breath. “No one is running away. No one is being forced. We’re going to figure this out calmly.”
Bethany looked furious — but also scared. For the first time, she realized she might actually lose her daughter if she pushed too hard.
“Fine,” Bethany said through clenched teeth. “But this isn’t permanent.”
Brooke’s shoulders dropped in relief. “Thank you.”
Larry picked up the suitcase and set it aside. “We’ll arrange for you to stay with Sharra for a while. But we’re also starting family counseling.”
Brooke hesitated — then nodded.
Bethany didn’t speak. She just walked upstairs, slamming the bedroom door.
As the house echoed with the sound, Larry looked at Brooke.
“You scared me,” he admitted quietly.
“You scared me too,” she replied.
That night, for the first time in months, Brooke slept without feeling trapped.
But upstairs, Bethany stared at the ceiling — realizing that control was slipping through her fingers… and that if she didn’t change, she might lose Brooke forever.
And this time, it wouldn’t just be a threat.
