The house was silent, but Bethany’s mind was screaming.

The digital clock on the bedside table glowed 2:47 a.m. Bethany lay stiff under the blanket, her eyes wide open, heart pounding as if something terrible was about to happen. Every tiny sound—the creak of the floor, the hum of the heater—made her flinch.

She turned slowly toward Larry.

He was lying beside her, eyes closed, but not fully asleep. He had noticed her restless movements for hours.

“Larry…” her voice trembled, barely louder than a whisper.

He opened his eyes immediately. “Bethany? What’s wrong?”

She swallowed hard, clutching the blanket to her chest. “I… I can’t sleep.”

Larry sat up slightly, concern written all over his face. “Since when?”

“All night,” she said, shaking her head. “Every time I close my eyes, my chest tightens. I feel like something bad is coming.”

Larry reached for her hand, wrapping his fingers around hers. “You’re safe. I’m right here.”

Bethany’s eyes filled with tears. “That’s the thing… I don’t feel safe.”

Larry froze.

She took a deep breath, then finally said the words she’d been holding in.

“Someone called me tonight.”

Larry’s grip tightened. “Who?”

“I don’t know,” Bethany whispered. “The voice was cold. Female. She said… ‘If you think you’re coming to Montana without consequences, you’re mistaken.’”

Larry sat upright instantly. “What?”

“I tried calling back,” Bethany continued, her voice shaking, “but the number didn’t exist. Larry, I swear, it wasn’t a prank.”

Anger flashed across his face. “Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”

“I didn’t want to scare you,” she said softly. “But now I’m scared. Every shadow looks like someone watching me.”

Larry swung his legs off the bed. “That’s it. This isn’t okay.”

Bethany grabbed his arm. “Please don’t go confront anyone. I just needed you to know why I can’t sleep.”

Larry turned back toward her, his expression softening. He pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly.

“You should’ve told me the moment it happened,” he said gently. “No one gets to threaten you. No one.”

She buried her face into his chest, her body trembling. “What if going to Montana is a mistake?”

Larry paused, then said firmly, “If you go, you won’t go alone. And if you decide not to go, that’s okay too.”

Bethany looked up at him. “You mean it?”

“I mean it,” he said. “Your peace matters more than anyone’s expectations.”

Tears rolled down her cheeks—not from fear this time, but relief.

“But there’s more,” she whispered.

Larry stiffened again. “What else?”

“I keep seeing Jaden’s face,” she said quietly. “And the baby. I’m scared that my presence will cause problems… or that someone will try to hurt me to keep me away.”

Larry’s jaw clenched. “Then we prepare. We don’t panic.”

He reached for his phone. “Tomorrow, we change your number. We add security cameras. And I’ll be making a few calls of my own.”

Bethany nodded slowly. “Thank you for believing me.”

Larry kissed her forehead. “You’re not crazy. And you’re not alone.”

He pulled the blanket up around her and held her close. For the first time that night, Bethany’s breathing began to slow.

But as she finally drifted toward sleep…
