“Hello?” she whispered.

Brooke froze. “What did she do?”
Sharra paused, almost as if she was afraid to say it aloud. “She’s the reason Larry got those lawsuit papers. She’s the one who started the case.”
Brooke’s eyes widened in disbelief. “You mean Mom… did that to Dad?”
“Yes,” Sharra whispered. “But there’s more.”

Brooke’s hands shook as she clutched the phone. “Why would she do that?”
Sharra sighed. “She was desperate. She thought Larry was hiding money from her — that he was planning to leave her for someone else. She got advice from the wrong person, and now it’s spiraling out of control.”
Brooke felt a wave of nausea. “You’re saying my mom filed a fake claim against Dad?”
“Not exactly fake,” Sharra said carefully. “But exaggerated. And now, if Larry finds out the full truth… she could lose everything.”
Brooke went silent. Her heart pounded in her ears.

For days, the house was silent. Larry slept in the guest room. Brooke avoided her mother entirely. Bethany’s guilt consumed her — she’d tried to protect her family, and instead, she had torn it apart.
Then, one night, Brooke’s phone buzzed again.
Sharra: “He’s leaving, Brooke. Larry’s packing his things.”
