CHAPTER 1: THE KNOCK AT THE DOOR
It was supposed to be a quiet morning.
Anthony had just returned from a long meeting with his lawyer Dean, the latest in a never-ending legal war against Shayla. Amber had dropped by with breakfast, hoping for a few peaceful minutes — for once.
Then came the knock.
Three short raps. Firm. Official.
Anthony opened the door to find two uniformed officers on the porch. One held a clipboard. The other already had his hand resting on the cuffs.
“Mr. Jackson?”
“Yes?”
“We have a warrant for the arrest of Shayla Washington on charges of paternity fraud, document tampering, and obstruction of justice. Where is she?”
Amber gasped. Anthony froze.
Shayla had finally been caught.
CHAPTER 2: SHAYLA’S DOWNFALL
Shayla had ignored all court orders to cooperate with the final DNA hearing. She’d stalled, changed addresses, even tried to file a restraining order against Anthony’s lawyer to delay the process.
But Amber’s discovery of the fake medical records, the journal, and the secret file from New Beginnings Clinic had given Dean everything he needed.
Shayla had lied under oath.
She had used false identities, swapped lab results, and listed two men she knew weren’t the father — just to secure custody and keep Anthony financially tied to her.
The charges were severe. And the judge wasn’t playing games anymore.
CHAPTER 3: “I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY.”
At booking, Shayla remained stone cold. She wouldn’t speak to Anthony. Wouldn’t make eye contact with Amber. Even Kai, who watched the entire arrest from the top of the stairs, couldn’t get more than a whisper from her.
“Mommy?”
“Go to your room, baby.”
Her voice cracked for the first time.
Anthony watched from across the living room, fists clenched. He wanted to feel vindicated. Instead, he felt… empty.

Amber told him not to go.
Dean told him not to go.

So he went.
CHAPTER 5: THE CARD SHE KEPT
They met in a holding room at the county detention center. Shayla wore orange, her hair pulled back. Her eyes were tired, hollow, but behind them was still that same fire.
Anthony: “You said you had something to say. Better make it worth it.”
Shayla smiled bitterly.
Shayla: “Oh, it’s worth it. You think you’ve won, Anthony. You think Amber’s little detective work blew everything open. But you don’t know half the truth.”
Anthony: “Then tell me. Stop dancing around it.”
Shayla leaned forward slowly, hands folded.
Shayla: “The reason I lied… the reason I had to… is because you were never supposed to know the truth. About Kai… or about your other child.”
Silence.
Anthony: “What did you just say?”
Shayla: “Kai isn’t your only son. You have another. And you signed his adoption papers five years ago… without even knowing it.”
CHAPTER 6: THE FORGED SIGNATURE
Shayla slid a document across the table. It was smuggled in — against court rules. An old adoption release form. Anthony’s name was scribbled at the bottom.
But it wasn’t his handwriting.
Shayla: “You got me caught up in your perfect little world. But before you and I got married, I was pregnant. And your mother — yeah, Angelina — paid me off to make it disappear. She forged your name. Sent the baby to a private agency in North Carolina.”
Anthony stared at the page. The date. The address. His blood ran cold.
Shayla: “That boy is six years old now. And he’s yours.”
CHAPTER 7: THE TRUTH HURTS WORSE THAN THE LIE
The room felt like it was spinning. Anthony’s mind raced with questions, memories, flashes of arguments with his mother that never made sense — and her silence when he’d told her about Kai.
“I did what I had to do,” Shayla said softly. “You would’ve chosen Amber back then. I was desperate. But I didn’t make up that first pregnancy. That child is real. And I never stopped wondering where they sent him.”
“You think I deserve prison? Fine. But you deserve the truth. And now you have it.”
CHAPTER 8: AFTERMATH
Anthony left the detention center in a daze.
His mother wouldn’t answer the phone.
Amber was pacing when he returned home. She rushed toward him, ready to hear that Shayla had cracked, confessed, admitted she’d lied about everything.
But all Anthony could say was:
“There’s another child.”
Amber froze.
“What do you mean… another child?”
“Shayla had my baby before Kai. My mom… had him adopted behind my back.”
Amber sat down slowly. And for the first time in weeks, the two of them were speechless.
