Chapter Two: The Distance Between Them
On the plane, Anthony sat by the window, arms crossed, headphones in. Amber watched him — the way his jaw tightened every time Kai’s name was mentioned on the news, how he scrolled through text messages from lawyers like they were love letters.
They hadn't really spoken since the press found out about Shayla hiding at Wayne’s house. Amber had hoped this trip would reset everything. Maybe even bring them closer again.
But from the moment they landed, the air between them was different.
Chapter Three: The Late-Night Call
That first night in the cabin, while Anthony stepped out to take a call from his lawyer, Amber did something unexpected.
She opened her notes app and reread the message she’d been writing for days:
“Anthony, you’re searching for the truth like it’ll fix the past. But I’ve been holding on to something, too. Something I didn’t tell you when we got back together…”
She couldn’t send it.
Not yet.
Chapter Four: The Stranger at the Cafe
The next morning, they visited a small-town café. The kind with mismatched mugs and friendly baristas who didn’t care who they were. They sat quietly until Anthony went to the counter.
That’s when he walked in.
A man. Mid-thirties. Familiar.
Amber’s blood ran cold.
His name was Jace — a part of her past Anthony never knew about. And he wasn’t just an ex… he was a secret.
“Amber?” Jace said, stunned. “After all this time?”
Amber stood frozen, the air sucked out of the room.
Anthony returned seconds later. “Everything okay?”
Amber forced a smile. “Yeah. Just... someone I used to know.”
But Jace didn’t move. He looked at Anthony. Then at Amber. Then said the one thing that shattered the moment:
“Does he know what we lost?”
Chapter Five: The Reveal
Later that night, Anthony confronted her.
“Who is he?”
“No one,” Amber tried. “Just… a mistake from the past.”
But Anthony knew lies. He’d been buried in them for months. And now he could feel another forming between them.
Amber sighed.
“Jace was… someone I loved. Before you. Before Shayla. We were supposed to have a baby.”
Anthony’s face fell.
“Supposed to?”
Amber nodded, tears welling.
“I miscarried. And I never told anyone. Not even Brittany. It’s haunted me ever since. And when I see Kai, when I see what you’re going through with Shayla… I feel like I’m being punished all over again.”

Anthony didn’t speak. He just pulled her into a hug — the first real one in months. But before she could breathe again, Amber whispered something else.
“There’s more, Anthony. I didn’t just come on this trip to get away. I needed to see how you’d react… because I think I might be pregnant.”

Anthony pulled back.
“Yours?” he asked.
Amber gave him a look. It cut deeper than any courtroom.
“You know the answer.”
