Amber’s phone buzzed just past midnight.
It was a private number, and the message sent a chill through her spine:
“If you really want to know the truth about Kai… meet me tomorrow. Come alone.”
Amber stared at the screen. She knew who it was. Shayla.
Anthony had warned her never to meet Shayla behind his back, especially after the court drama and DNA scandal, but Amber’s curiosity was eating her alive.
She needed answers.
Chapter Two: The Secret Meeting Place
The next evening, Amber parked her car near an abandoned lakeside café on the outskirts of town. Fog rolled across the water, and the air was heavy with tension.
Shayla appeared from the shadows, hoodie up, sunglasses on despite the dark. She looked exhausted, as if the weight of the entire world was crushing her.
“You came,” Shayla said softly.
“I need to know,” Amber replied. “Is Anthony… really Kai’s father?”
Shayla hesitated. Tears welled in her eyes.
“No one was ever supposed to know this,” she whispered.
Chapter Three: The Deadly Secret
Shayla reached into her bag and handed Amber a sealed envelope.
“This is the original DNA result,” Shayla said. “The one Anthony never saw. I changed the first test… and I lied to the court.”
Amber’s hands trembled as she opened the envelope.
Inside, a single line stood out in bold:
“Paternity Excluded – 0.00% Match.”
Amber’s jaw dropped.
“Anthony… isn’t Kai’s father?”
“No,” Shayla whispered. “And that’s not even the worst part.”
Chapter Four: The Deeper Betrayal
Amber looked up in shock.
“Then who is?”
Shayla’s lips quivered as she finally confessed.
“It’s Zashery. Anthony’s friend. I made a mistake… and I tried to cover it up. I thought I could fix it before anyone found out. But the lies just kept growing…”
Amber stepped back, the night air suddenly freezing around her.
All the tension between Anthony and Zashery… the shady meetings… the sudden change in Anthony’s mood… it all made sense now.

Shayla grabbed Amber’s hand desperately.
“Please… don’t tell Anthony yet. I need time to fix this. If he knows I lied… he’ll destroy me in court. I’ll lose Kai forever.”
Amber pulled her hand away. Her mind was spinning.
“You didn’t just lie to him, Shayla. You lied to all of us.”
Before she could leave, Shayla called out one last time:
“Amber… if this gets out, none of us will survive it. Think carefully about who you tell.”
Amber drove off into the night, her heart pounding — clutching the envelope that could end Anthony and Shayla forever.
