🧳 Chapter 1: The Suitcase by the Door
The morning was unusually quiet in Shayla’s apartment. No courtroom calls, no Anthony shouting in the hallway, no lawyers knocking at the door.
Just Shayla… standing still in the living room, staring at a single packed suitcase by the door.
Kai’s diaper bag was slung over the arm of the couch. His favorite blanket — the blue one with cartoon stars — was folded neatly on top. He was napping in the crib, blissfully unaware that his whole world was about to change.
Shayla stared at her reflection in the window. Her eyes were tired, her lips trembling, but there was something else in her expression now: certainty.
“I can’t do this anymore,” she whispered.
And just like that, she picked up her son, kissed the crown of his head, and whispered, “We’re going to start over.”

Angelina opened the front door before Shayla even knocked. Dressed in silk loungewear with her signature red lipstick on, she looked surprised — but not shocked.
“So… it’s finally come to this?” Angelina said coolly.
Shayla adjusted Kai on her hip.
“He doesn’t know I’m here.”
Angelina’s eyes narrowed. “Yet.”
“I need somewhere to stay. Just for a while,” Shayla said. “Just until I figure things out. Kai doesn’t deserve this mess.”
Angelina opened the door wider, motioning her inside.
“Put the baby down. You look like you haven’t slept in days.”

Later that evening, with Kai asleep in the guest room, Shayla sat on Angelina’s velvet sofa sipping herbal tea. She didn’t trust Angelina fully — but right now, she had no one else.
Angelina broke the silence.
“You want to know something crazy? You’re not the first girl to run here with Anthony’s baby and a broken heart.”
Shayla stared. “What?”
Angelina stood and walked over to a drawer. She pulled out a small velvet pouch and tossed it on the table.
Inside: a baby bracelet. Engraved with the name Arie.
“Who’s Arie?” Shayla asked.
Angelina’s voice dropped.
“Anthony’s first child. A daughter. From when he was 19. The mother left the country. No one talks about her. But that baby was real.”
Shayla felt like the room was spinning.
“He never told me… not once.”
Angelina shrugged. “Anthony hides everything. He always has.”
📞 Chapter 5: Anthony Finds Out — And the Voicemail That Shatters Him
Three hours later, Anthony’s phone buzzed.
Unknown Number (voicemail):
“Hey, Anthony. This is Lynda from the leasing office. Just confirming Shayla dropped off her keys this morning. Also, Baby Kai’s crib was removed. Just want to make sure everything’s okay.”
Anthony froze.
“She left.”
He dialed her number. Straight to voicemail. Again. Again. Again.
Then he got a text — not from Shayla, but from Angelina.
Angelina (text):
“She’s here. With your son. And I suggest you don’t come unless you’re ready to tell her everything — including about Arie.”
Anthony dropped the phone.
“No… not like this.”
🧨 Chapter 6: The Calm Before the Storm
That night, Shayla stood over Kai’s crib in Angelina’s guest room. He was still sleeping peacefully.
She held his tiny hand and whispered:
“No more games. No more DNA tests. No more begging to be chosen. I choose you now.”
She turned off the light and walked into the hallway — only to find Angelina standing in the shadows, arms crossed.
“He’ll come. You know that, right?”
Shayla nodded.
“Let him. But this time, I’m not backing down.”
