“Anthony Tells Shayla That Court Ordered Another Last DNA Test for Kai 😱”
Shayla was halfway through folding Lyla’s laundry when her phone buzzed.
Anthony. After everything that had happened—the betrayal, the confession, the silence—seeing his name still made her heart skip a beat.
She hesitated before answering. “Hey…”
His voice came through, low and tense. “Shayla. I need to talk to you… in person.”
Something in his tone made her stomach twist. Not anger. Not heartbreak. Just... unease. Like someone about to open a door they were scared to walk through.
The Meeting
They met at the park—the same one where Anthony had pushed Lyla on the swings just a few months ago, before the truth about Baby Kai shattered his world.
He stood near the benches, hands stuffed in his jacket pockets, eyes puffy and tired. Shayla approached cautiously.
“What’s going on?” she asked.
He didn’t waste time.
“The court ordered another DNA test,” Anthony said. “For Kai.”
Shayla blinked. “Wait… I thought—wasn’t it already confirmed? The other test said you weren’t the father.”
Anthony nodded. “Yeah. Zero percent paternity. But Amber filed an appeal. Claimed the sample might have been tampered with. Said she never authorized that test, and that I was trying to manipulate the custody case.”
Shayla’s jaw dropped. “You’re kidding.”
“I wish I was,” he said, voice cracking. “The judge sided with her. Said that because the original test wasn’t court-supervised, they can’t rely on it for custody decisions. So now… they’ve scheduled an official one. Last chance. Court-ordered. Witnessed. No loopholes.”
Shayla stared at him. “What does she want from you? If she already knows you’re not the father—”
Anthony interrupted, “That’s the thing, Shayla. I don’t think she knows.”
Doubt Returns
He dropped onto the bench and sighed. “What if I was wrong? What if the first test was wrong? What if… he really is my son?”
Shayla sat beside him, stunned. “Anthony… you saw the report. You told me how it broke you.”
“I know,” he whispered. “But you weren’t there when he took his first steps. You didn’t see his smile when I read to him at night. You didn’t hear him call me ‘Dada’ for the first time. I don’t care what that paper said—I felt like his father. And now, I’m going crazy wondering if I made the biggest mistake of my life by walking away.”
Shayla wanted to say something. To comfort him. But what do you say to a man caught between two impossible realities?
Amber’s Silence
Amber wasn’t saying much.
She refused to speak to Anthony directly. All communication went through lawyers.
But the rumors were everywhere. Some people said she knew Anthony wasn’t the father and was just trying to hurt him. Others claimed she genuinely believed he was Kai’s dad and was terrified of losing that family dynamic.
And then there were the whispers that another man—Lance, the one she briefly dated during her “off-again” time with Anthony—had resurfaced.
Shayla heard all of it. But she knew Anthony didn’t need more gossip. He needed truth.
The Night Before the Test
The night before the court-ordered DNA test, Anthony couldn’t sleep. He paced his apartment, pictures of Kai scattered on the table. His tiny socks still in a drawer. A father’s heart refusing to let go of a child he might not even be biologically tied to.
He called Shayla again at 1:17 a.m.
“I don’t know what’s worse,” he said, “finding out he’s not mine… or finding out he is and I left him.”
Shayla, soft-voiced and tired, replied, “Whatever happens, Anthony… you did your best. You showed up. You loved him. That’s more than most real fathers ever do.”
The Test Day
The courthouse was cold. Clinical. The room had no warmth—just a nurse, a judge’s assistant, and two people barely speaking to each other.
Kai was too young to understand. He just clung to his stuffed dinosaur as the swabs were taken. Amber avoided Anthony’s eyes. Anthony tried not to cry.
The results would come back in five days.
Five days of silence. Of waiting. Of praying.
The Call
On the fifth day, Anthony’s phone rang. Unknown number.
He answered with a shaking hand.
“Mr. Brooks? This is Judge Hill’s office. We have the official paternity results for Baby Kai.”
Anthony closed his eyes. The world stood still.
And the voice said...
