They sat across from each other, the air between them heavy with everything unspoken.
“It was one night,” Amber said, her voice shaking. “It meant nothing. But what we have? What we were building again? That means everything to me.”
Anthony shook his head.
“I defended you to everyone. I told Shayla, Cocoa, even my own mother that you were the only one who never lied. That you were the one who truly loved me.”
“I do love you,” she said, tears forming. “More than anyone ever has.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Amber looked down.
“Because I knew it would break you.”
“No,” he said coldly. “You knew it would break us. And you were right.”

Amber followed him to the door.
“Please, Anthony. Don’t let Shayla win. Don’t let this be the thing that destroys everything we could’ve had.”
He turned to her one last time.
“You were supposed to be my peace, Amber. My safe place. But now… I don’t know who to trust anymore.”
And then he walked into the rain.
